These are the words of the Blessed Mother on this day:
Do you do penance when you propose to repent of the offences you have committed?
I do wish to tell you that penance is salutary because it develops the person to a higher ability to suppress vices and therefore to gain greater virtues and spiritual gifts.
However great your desire to repent, acts of penance enhance the sorrow for the offences committed against God. The sorrow you feel will lead each one of you to a greater love for God, for your fellow beings and for yourself. An act of penance will also guide you towards a personal feeling of acting in justice for compensation granted, and further, each one of you will be able to receive the joy of God’s forgiveness, in hearts freed of all guilt. Penance can lead you to a greater level of love.
You are certainly aware of that aspect which you describe as temptation and which is the act of offence to God. That is when you can learn about your own predisposition to offend God and that aspect of your personality that you should seek to control by doing appropriate penance.
You can do penance in many ways and always fruitfully. One great way is by practicing loving those whom you do not like, even recognising that God loves all His creatures, including your enemies. There is no better way to do penance than to love fully and sincerely each and every creature of God, and to see Jesus in the face of each of your brothers and sisters, and also His love in the providence which abounds in the world in which you live.
Do not fear acts of penance, because the present generations do. Rather remember, for example, that you cannot throw away selfish pride without experiencing some act of humility; nor can you control any other desire without eliminating from your behaviour, those acts which led you to offend. Penance reinforces the human spirit to exercise fully all opposition to evil in whichever form or aspect in which it erodes human dignity and contradicts the laws, as dictated by God, the Father, the Almighty.
Know therefore, children of God, that the self-discipline of penance will lead you to a greater power and understanding.
